THE GET: I received this cigar from Brun del Re at SmokeEasy in October of last year. This is a fantastic event that I have attended the last two years with my good friend. It is a great chance to meet some of the people who produce and provide the enjoyment we are all looking for in cigars. This is a sampling event only, there are no cigar sales. Your admission gets you a cigar from each booth, where you can learn about the company and the cigar. It doesn’t hurt that you can sample various spirits also. This event for 2011 is without a location and will try to find one for 2012. You will be greatly missed this year, my dear friend (not you Josh, SmokeEasy).
THE SMOKE LOCATION: I smoked this cigar the morning of day 3 on a weekend backpacking trip to Pamelia Lake. This was my 5th and last of that trip, and was greatly enjoyed with a couple of cups of coffee fresh off the camp fire. Beautiful scenery was all around and this particular morning was no different.
THE PACKAGING: The band is very high-class looking with the red on gold with the crest and ornate design. The boxes these come in are a cherry wood colored 3 tiered nicely built box. My overall impression from the packaging is that this is a fancy sophisticated company.
THE CIGAR: The Colonial series is one of four produced by Brun del Re. This uses a Costa Rican madura wrapper and a filler of Cuban seed and Nicaraguan tobacco. It is available in 5 sizes, this robusto being the smallest. It smelled great and the wrapper had no issues. The wrapper was a nice dark color and the natural oils were present but not overwhelming. It felt very firm and had no soft spots, very nicely packed. Coffee is done, it’s go time.
THE SMOKE: When I cut into this, the cap held up with no problems. Pre light draw gave the impression of a little stronger cigar than I was expecting. Lighting it was easy and the burn was even. The flavors went very well with the coffee. Does anything go better with coffee than a nice cigar? It started with a little spice but mild and ended without the spice and a little stronger. This was a 45 minute smoke and was a great way to end a trip.
THE SKINNY: Go try one of these. Definitely a good smoke. With that said, I don’t know where outside of Illinois to purchase them. I also don’t know what they cost. If they are reasonable than that is a bonus. What I know of this company is that they make quality cigars and this fit that description. I will find some of the other blends to try for sure.
